De-burring
Shot blast
Shot blast treatment can quickly remove lightly attached burrs from complex parts and less accessible areas. It uses precision impact to eliminate labor-intensive hand de-burring.
Thermal
Thermal de-burring uses instantaneous and very intense heat energy to perform the de-burring operation.
- Parts are placed inside a cylindrical chamber which is sealed, then pressurized with a mixture of combustible gases
- This gaseous mixture completely encloses the parts, reaching into even the most confined areas
- When the gaseous mixture is ignited, a powerful combustion takes place generating a very intense heat lasting only a few milliseconds. This intense heat burns, or oxidizes, the burrs
- Only the burrs are removed because the intense heat attacks areas with considerable surface area and very little mass
- All areas of the part are exposed to the de-burring operation meaning it is virtually impossible to miss a burr
Cryogenic
- Cryogenic de-burring uses a system where parts are placed in a chamber, exposed to extremely cold temperatures (achieved with the use of liquid nitrogen) and then tumbled and blasted with media
- Because the burrs have a high surface area relative to their mass, they “freeze” very quickly and become brittle
- The tumbling action—combined with the impact of the media—removes the burrs without damaging the part itself
